The Atlanta Botanical Gardens

by Claudine on February 20th, 2008

The Atlanta Botanical Gardens is the perfect place to take your family this summer. Located in midtown, Atlanta, this is a must-see destination. Your young children will love the kid’s area. Watch your children laugh and play with other children in a child-safe tree house. The sprinkler water-spouts are big hit with the kids, and even your little 3-year-olds can enjoy them. The water is low to the ground and comes out in a gentle trickle. There is also a huge caterpillar that children can crawl through, in addition to a dinosaur exhibit in which children dig through a sandbox to find dinosaur eggs.

Then there are the flowers! There are camellias, orchards, cacti, wildflowers and hundreds of other flowers. I love the tulips, and the rose garden. Your family will also have a great time learning about the various flowers in the gardens’ 15-acres. Signs throughout the gardens indicate the type of flowers and interesting facts about them. You can easily plan on spending the entire day in the gardens. The entire area is beautifully landscaped, and there are dozens of photo opportunities there. Don’t forget your camera.  You’ll also find a Japanese garden, a forest garden and a conservatory. The flowers range from those that can be found in the tropics to flora, native to the desert. Small children may get tired of all of the walking, but there are a few benches in the gardens, and I found a shady place to sit near a lovely fountain.

Piedmont Park is adjacent to the Atlanta Botanical Gardens, so you can plan to spend time at the gardens and picnic at the park. Your family can park at the gardens for free and walk over to Piedmont. Parking at the gardens is hassle-free and located right on the grounds, so you don’t have to worry about a long trek to get to the gardens.

Hours are 9 am-7 pm on Tuesdays through Sundays from April through September and from 9 a.m. through 5 p.m. on Tuesdays through Sundays from October through March.

It costs $12 for an adult to spend a day in the gardens; Seniors can visit the gardens for $9 and the cost is $7 students. Students must have a student identification card to get the reduced rate. Children under three can visit the Atlanta Botanical Gardens for free.
