Storm: Significant Damage in Downtown Atlanta

by Claudine on March 14th, 2008

Some crazy, weird weather has been coming through this spring. A friend of mine who was leaving the gym downtown said that he could hardly see as he drove: Bucket of water were being poured on my car. My windshield wipers could barely turn. Then big pieces of rock were pounding on my car. That was no debris.  It was hail, said Alan a local fitness buff. At this moment, at 11:56 p.m. exit ramps into Atlanta are blocked off.

The streets are badly flooded.  There is debris and glass everywhere. During the thunderstorm today on March 14,  people looked up in the sky and saw glass and furniture being thrown in the air. Cars were smashed and debris littered the streets.  Windows were shattered in the Omni Hotel. The CNN Center was also ripped up. Telephone poles fell and crused cars. Water was running down the stairs from the CNN Center like a waterfall. There was a flood inside. Other buildings were torn up.  The World Congress Center was ripped up. Spring storms hit and hit hard.  The Georgia Dome was damaged during  the storm as well. Apparently, there was damage to the roof. People who were inside the Georgia Dome said that they saw the dome roof waving and could hear the racket. Holes started to appear in the dome and people began running during the basketball game that was going on in the dome, said an eye witness on the channel 11 news. Thanks to quick-thinking security guards, there was no stampede.  People thought that the roof was going to cave in during the SEC game at the dome. That did not happen! The game continued. At this point, there were no injuries inside the dome, but people were hit by glass outside the dome.  Some people in Atlanta had their cars stuck in parking garages and could not get out. Another storm is going to hit in about 37 minutes, according to weather forecasters.

People in town for conferences should seek shelter. Hotels are full, so it is not clear where people, displaced by the storm will go.  Remember, another storm may be on the way.
