Peanut Festival
Plains, GA is the peanut capital of the US. Aside from peanuts, it is also famous for being the hometown and current residence of former president and Nobel Peace Prize winner Jimmy Carter. This weekend, September 22-23, will be the 10th annual Peanut Festival.
Peanuts are an important commodity in Georgia which is responsible for a $2.0 billion industry. Georgia’s climate and unique soil make it feasible to grow high-quality peanuts. A few facts about Georgia peanuts from the Georgia Peanut Commission:
- Georgia produces 45% of the United States’ peanuts.
- Over 80 counties in Georgia produced 1,511,655,000 lbs. Of peanuts in 2003.
- Georgia has 14,160 farms with peanuts and over 4,800 active farms.
- Georgia has approximately 250 peanut related businesses.
- The peanut industry contributes more than 50,000 jobs in Georgia.
The Peanut Festival promises a fun weekend with lots of activities in store for everyone. There will be a fun run/road race, arts and crafts, a parade, a Peanut Pavillion, live entertainment, train rides, and many more. The highlight of the weekend is a book signing by both President Jimmy Carter and his wife Mrs. Rosalyn Carter. The book signing is scheduled for Saturday, September 22 at 1:30PM at the City Hall for President Carter, and at the Plains Inns & Antiques for Mrs. Carter. See you there!
