Medieval Times

We’ve been meaning to catch the jousting show and dinner at this place but logistics (and price) kept us away. We finally grabbed the opportunity when we found discount coupons for $5 off. Medieval Times is a dinner theater that offers a glimpse of what it was like back in the 11th century when life was about royalty, castles, and knighthood.
There are several pre and post show activities including picture taking with the King or Princess and mini shows. One of these activities included a live falcon show. There are also ceremonies for knighthood (additional $20). After the show, the entire cast is available for picture taking and autograph signing.

The show is set in a huge arena the size of a basketball court with stadium-style seating for a crowd of up to 1,500. Each section of the arena is assigned a knight which the guests in that section will root for. Knights are referred to by the color of their attire. The show is about a kingdom headed by King Alphonso and his daughter Princess Esperanza. The King held a competition for the six knights and whoever the winner is will win Princess Esperanza’s hand in marriage. The tournament included a flag toss, ring pierce, javelin throw, and of course, jousting while the knights are saddled to their horses. There were also lots of sword fighting.

The plot thickens when the champion of the competition is accosted and challenged by the traitor who killed the King’s brother . A battle between the two ensues and finally, the traitor is defeated. The scary executioner appears and asks the crowd whether he should live or die. The crowd cheers, “Die, die, die!” The kingdom is then sent back to peace. I can honestly say that I loved the 2-hour show. It was exciting and suspenseful. Add to that the dramatic original musical score recorded by world-famous Prague Symphony Orchestra.

The meal was not bad either. It consisted of 4 courses that started with steaming hot vegetable soup ladled into metal bowls and garlic bread. In true medieval fashion, flatware are not available and one must eat with bare hands. But clever me thought ahead and brought some for our group. Next came half a roasted chicken which was big enough to feed two. It was tender, moist and flavorful. A small slab of barbecued ribs and a baked half a potato came right after. One refill of soda is included as well as coffee and an apple pastry for desert. All in all, it was a decent meal.
You get a two-hour show, a four-course meal, and pre and post-show activities for $47.95 adults, $35.95 children 12 and under. Not bad really. Show times are Friday-Sunday and times may vary but generally expect seating times to be at 5pm on Fridays and Sundays and 5pm and 7:30pm on Saturdays. Medieval Times is located inside the Discover Mills mall complex on Sugarloaf Parkway in Lawrenceville. Check the website for special offers and discount coupons.
