Looking for Tara in Atlanta

MMHexteriorBenDashwood Many people who come here are expecting to see the South of Gone with the Wind and are disappointed to find such an urban, international city. Nevertheless, if you know where to look, you can see a little of the history that Margaret Mitchell drew upon for her famous novel.

One good place to start is the Margaret Mitchell House and Museum, located at 990 Peachtree St. It has its own unique history of being saved from the wrecking ball and then falling victim to a fire. But some determined people saved it and turned it into a Literary Center. Here you can tour the apartment where Margaret Mitchell wrote a good deal of the novel. For more information about hours and admissions, go to www.gwtw.org.

This year is the 70th anniversary of the Gone With the Wind film and TheLoew's grand Margaret Mitchell House has partnered with Turner Classic Movies, The Fabulous Fox Theatre, and the Atlanta Film Festival to present a Gone With the Wind celebration April 18-19 including discussions with film critics about the legacy of the movie. A special screening of the movie will be held at the Fox Theatre on Sunday, April 19.
