Food Finds: Korean Melons

by Chloe on October 2nd, 2007

I was at my neighborhood Super H Mart and found these beautiful Korean melons. They are actually cantaloupes but look like squash. Called Boseok Korean Melons, they have white flesh. They are sweet and tastes like cantaloupes and honey dews combined. Pick the ones that are still firm but not hard. You want them to be crunchy but not hard enough that your jaw hurts from chewing. You don’t want them soft and soggy either.

I bought a box that was on special for $9.99 and had 9 melons in it. That amounts to a little over a dollar apiece which is a steal. These melons are great for breakfast with a side of good, organic cottage cheese. Or drizzled with chocolate or caramel sauce. But this is what I do: I cut them into tiny pieces then mix well with slightly melted chocolate ice cream, re-freeze for an hour or two, then enjoy. Aaah, delicious!
