Atlanta Development: Hotels in the Horizon

As the saying goes, there’s always something new planned in Atlanta. This year is no different. Several hotels are opening in Atlanta by the end of the year, and at least two more Atlanta hotels are planned for the Buckhead area next year.
Three New W Hotels
Three new W Hotels are scheduled to open in Atlanta this year. These Atlanta hotels will open in Buckhead, Downtown and Midtown. The Buckhead location will open this fall with 291 rooms and 7,000-square-feet of meeting space.
This December, a 237-room W hotel with 75 condominiums will open in the Ivan Allen Plaza.

Atlanta, Home of the Largest Airline in the World

Delta Airlines and Northwest announced a merger, creating the largest airlines in the world. The airline will be called Delta and will be based in Atlanta with some operations in Minneapolis. The merger is said to be due to increased airline costs. It is said to help offset oil prices. We are waiting to see if or how much airline tickets will increase. On one hand, a larger airline could have an incredible frequent flier program with awesome incentives. Man Killed in the Rubble

At least one person, a man was killed in the tornado on March 15. A man’s body was found in the rubble in downtown Atlanta on Saturday, according to a report from the Atlanta Journal Constitution online. It is not known at this time whether the man was homeless or not, since there had been no missing person’s report. I recall reading that the man’s body was found under some bricks, so it is likely that a building had collapsed while he was standing or running near it.

Obama Wins Georgia, Coretta’s Life in the Theater

I took a nap on Tuesday, and when I woke up, I read that Obama had won Georgia earlier. Young voters and African American voters of all income levels voted for Obama in Georgia, according to a story by the New York Times. Mike Huckabee won the Republican primary. History is being made.

Speaking of history, a funny, touching play, revolving around five women who are impacted by Coretta Scott King is performing in Little Five Points. In the play, the women are viewing Corett’a body in state and find hope through their encounter. The play, performed at  Seven Stages Theater, will continue through February 24.

Renewal of Sales Tax Considered on Tuesday

Tuesday’s ballot will include an option for Atlanta residents to vote on a Municipal Option Sales Tax. This tax will allow the city to continue to impose a 1% sales tax on some goods which will help pay for city water and sewer costs. The sales tax will also help fund the development of an improved water and sewer infrastructure for the city, according to a Southwest Atlanta e-mail about the tax.

Shanghai, here we come!!!

Delta Air Lines, Atlanta’s own airline, finally acquired approval from the U.S. Department of Transportation to offer non-stop flights between Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and Shanghai, China beginning March 30, 2008. The petition was filed in January earlier this year. Previous applications were also filed in 2000 and 2005 but were denied.
Delta’s application was heavily supported by Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue who said,:
“Investors, businesses, CEOs and those board members like to be close to where the investment is,” he said.
