Cool off, Music and Movies in Centennial Park

This is how we cool off in Atlanta and with temperatures in the 90s. you now know one reason why Atlanta is called Hotlanta. These children are participating in the traditional cool-off in the Olympic Rings fountain at Centennial Olympic Park. The water is synchronized and is programmed to spurt up or down. Centennial Olympic Park is a 21-acre, founded during the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.

Synchronized water and music shows occur daily 12:30 p.m., 3:30 p.m., 6:30 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Music in Centennial Olympic Park

There’s also music, R&B, jazz, and/or reggae from noon to 1 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday until October.

Wednesday WindDown is another opportunity to catch a free live concert in the park. That takes place every Wednesday from 5:30 to 8 p.m. until September.

Movies in the Park

Movies on the Lawn are every Thursday at sunset in the park. It’s like a drive-In movie without having a car. Bring a picnic, but bottles and grills are not allowed. Here is the movie schedule.

The landscaping is lovely in Centennial Park. It’s a good place to meet up with friends if you decide to split up and explore midtown. During the summer, concerts are often held in Centennial Park.

Getting to Centennial Olympic Park

Andrew Young International Blvd., Baker Street, Luckie Street, and Centennial Olympic Park Drive are adjacent to the park. Here is a map of downtown Atlanta and driving directions to the park.

Hours of Operation

The park is open daily from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Free Arts Events in April

There’s no reason to be bored in Atlanta. Get some exercise and an art lesson through the Turner First Thursday Downtown Artswalk, a self-guided art tour held the first and third Thursday of every month. An upcoming exhibit, Shadowdance by Keiko Guest is on display during a special evening Artswalk from 5 to 8 p.m. on April 3rd at the Rialto Center for Arts at Georgia State University. Shadowdance is a series of black and white photographs displaying dancers in suspended motion. Shadowdance will be on display through April 11 during regular hours. So, in addition to the Artswalk, you can visit the exhibit from Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or by appointment at the Rialto Center. Call 404-413-9820 if you would like to make an appointment to see the exhibit outside of regular hours.

Lunchtime Learning Performing Arts Series

Feed your senses during the Lunchtime Learning Performing Arts Series on April 16th from Noon to 1 p.m. Bring your lunch or spend $5 for some grub. Otherwise, this cultural event is free at the Rialto Center for the Arts at Georgia State University. Have lunch and enjoy a speaker or artist for an insider’s look into the craft.

April is National Poetry Month and National Jazz Month so get your cultural fill of great art in April. Visit the Rialto Center for a full calendar of events.

Cheap Eats: Super H Mart

For a guaranteed delicious cheap eats, head on over to Super H Mart (three locations: Duluth, Johns Creek and Riverdale) and try the Korean restaurant inside the supermarket’s food court. With prices starting at $4, you get a big Korean entree, rice, soup, and about 3 Korean appetizers (usually kimchi or pickled veggies like cabbage and radish). Pictured above is the Bulgogi Bibimbap. It’s basically a rice dish complete with vegetables and Korean beef. It is so delicious.

Super H Mart is a Korean-owned one-stop-shop for Asian fruits, vegetables, and dry goods, although they also carry American goods. The fresh seafood section is one of its must-visit, as well as their premises-prepared cooked food.
