]]> I’m Linda Erbele and I’ve dusted off the backpack and shaken the moths out of the old Atlanta Traveler hoodie. I’m going to tell you about places in Atlanta (and out of the city) that you’ve never been, and maybe things you don’t know about places you have been. Our readers and I want to read your travel stories too. I’ve been a writer for the last 11 years, with stories in magazines and newspapers in Georgia as well as nationally.  I’ve lived, loved and worked in and around Atlanta since, well, since all the signs in Chamblee were in English.

A perfect summer evening for me is cruising through a midtown neighborhood with the top down.  In the fall I may put on a sweater and turn the heater on, but the convertible is still the best way to view the North Georgia mountains painted in the fiery colors of fall leaves. And of course, in the spring, I enjoy the dogwoods, azaleas and jonquils as they begin in central Georgia and spread north.

So check back often, and let me know what I’ve missed in your favorite places!

We’re hiring a blogger to take over duties here, so if you’re interested in taking over those duties email me expressing your interest and providing links to other relevant writing.  Convince me that you’re the right person for the job.

Knowledge of Word Press and photo editing is preferred.  Blogging experience is nice, but is not as important as passion for the topic.  Pay is a monthly base plus traffic bonus.

There’s exciting news at the Georgia Aquarium. Dolphins are coming! Work will begin this summer on a multimillion dollar dolphin exhibit that will open in 2010.

]]> Gas certainly costs more than $2.55 a gallon here, but I thought that this was a pretty good picture anyway. tedsblog I was listening to the radio on the way home from work this afternoon and heard that, radio station V-103, 103.3 FM,  is giving away free gas this week! Yes. Free gas! I wonder if there is a minimum amount that you can get? Stay tuned to this blog for more information on this. As soon as I find out where they are giving it away, I’ll post. V-103 has not disclosed the location or details, yet.  Those of you who listen to the station and may have an idea of where the gas will be given away, give me a shout on the blog! I’m trying to listen, but I can’t sneak a listen at work. Even cell phones are not allowed. Yikes!

Oh no! Say it isn’t so. The Celtics won, 99-65.  It’s great that the Hawks went as far as they did. Hey, is anyone planning to greet them at the airport?  They will be in town tonight (Sunday 5/4) between 7:15 and 7:30. Here’s where to meet them.

]]> Atlanta Hawks fan

Yep! My Atlanta Hawks are on their way to Boston for game 7 after a fantastic win in Phillips Arena on Friday. In case you are under a rock or just haven’t heard, the Hawks won, 103 to 100. I read on the Hawks’ official site that the crowd was the biggest ever in the arena. Marvin Williams was the top scorer, wit 18 points, followed by Mike Biddy with 17 points. The Hawks game will air tomorrow, Sunday May 4 on ABC at 1 p.m.

]]> Delta Airlines and Northwest announced a merger, creating the largest airlines in the world. The airline will be called Delta and will be based in Atlanta with some operations in Minneapolis. The merger is said to be due to increased airline costs. It is said to help offset oil prices. We are waiting to see if or how much airline tickets will increase. On one hand, a larger airline could have an incredible frequent flier program with awesome incentives. The merge between the two airlines, however, could also translate into power and control over prices because of a decrease in competition.

So, I think that we are looking at higher airline tickets, but I’m just speculating on that one. Pilots (probably Northwest) were complaining that the deal could interfere with their seniority.Delta employees are getting a stake in both shares of the airlines and greater job security, so says corporate. It sounds like they are pretty much such during these, ugh, tough economic times. Good deal.

What this Means to You

The press release states that:

Customers also will benefit from the combined carriers’ complementary route networks, which together will offer people greater choice, competitive fares and a superior travel experience to more cities than any other airline. In addition, combining Delta and Northwest will create a global U.S. flag carrier strongly positioned to compete with foreign airlines that are continuing to increase service to the United States.

It’s clear that the airline will benefit the global market which may translate to more global destinations departing from its Atlanta hub. International offices for the airlines will be located in Amsterdam, Tokyo, and Paris.

Routes to Asian Destinations/Caribbean

Northwestern is bringing its strong alliances with Asian markets to the table. Apparently, the press release said, Northwestern has a stronghold on Asian flights, while Delta has more flights to the Caribbean than Northwestern. Fellow travelers, get your passports ready. Hopefully, we can all still afford to travel. People usually eliminate travel and eating out during a recession.

Flying Comforts

According to a press release and commentary by the Cranky Flier, personal entertainment and lie flat seats will be standard on all flights. Thank goodness for that one!

]]> The Braves game opening game against the Mets was canceled tonight due to inclement weather. The game will be rescheduled as part of a doubleheader to take place on May 20, so if you have a ticket for tonight’s game on March 4, you can attend the May 20th game at 1 p.m.
