Sign Up for Global Youth Service Day

Sign Up for Global Youth Service Day

Hands On Atlanta, a non-profit organization, is asking for volunteers to sign up for Global  Youth Service Day, taking place on Saturday, April 26. Get your children involved! Although the event is targeted to youth, I noticed that some of the projects indicate that families are invited to participate! Youth groups are also encouraged to sign up!
Global Youth Service Day is said to be the largest volunteer service day in the world. At least 2,500 youths from 5 through college-aged students will participate in community service projects such as building picnic tables, cutting down plant overgrowth, making repairs, cleaning …read more

Have You Heard of This Scam?

Have You Heard of This Scam?

The Tom Joyner Morning Show, a radio show on 104.1, discussed scams. A scam expert told listeners about some of the top scams. I was surprised to hear about one scam in particular. Here’s how it works. You go to a gas station and decide to pay for your gas at the pump using your debit card. So, you key your PIN number in at the pump like you have done about a million times.
You don’t know that there’s a video camera aimed right at the keypad. The crooked gas station gets a copy of the receipt with your credit …read more

Atlanta, Home of the Largest Airline in the World

Atlanta, Home of the Largest Airline in the World

Delta Airlines and Northwest announced a merger, creating the largest airlines in the world. The airline will be called Delta and will be based in Atlanta with some operations in Minneapolis. The merger is said to be due to increased airline costs. It is said to help offset oil prices. We are waiting to see if or how much airline tickets will increase. On one hand, a larger airline could have an incredible frequent flier program with awesome incentives. The merge between the two airlines, however, could also translate into power and control over prices because of a decrease in …read more

Do-it-Yourself Reports for Car Accidents?

Do-it-Yourself Reports for Car Accidents?

I had never heard of this before, but did you know that in some rural areas around Atlanta, the police won’t come out to a scene of car accidents if they consider the accident to be minor? It happened to me? I was driving out of my subdivision, minding my own business, when this sweet elderly lady swerved and hit me on my driver’s side. My driver’s side mirror flew off the car, and the car accident scared me to death, but I was not hurt. I hate car accidents!

I called the Georgia Highway Patrol, and they …read more

Segregation Exhibit at the History Center

Segregation Exhibit at the History Center

Courage, the Vision to End Segregation, the Guts to Fight It, an exhibit at the Art History Center of Atlanta is on display through June 22, 2008. The exhibit tells the story of the people in Clarendon, South Carolina who actually fought to eliminate segregation in schools. Their battle came prior to the famous Brown vs. the Board of Education case.
About the Exhibit
You may not have heard of the Reverend J.A. De Laine, who gathered community members up and filed a lawsuit protesting the segregated and unequal schools in the area. This exhibit is important because it tells the …read more

Arts Festival in Dahlonega

Arts Festival in Dahlonega

The Annual Music, Art Festival will be held April 18-20 in Dahlonega, Ga. That sounds well and fine, but an interesting tidbit is that something called Bear on the Square Mountain Festival will also be held during the Music and Art Festival in Hancock Park. I have to admit, that I am not familiar with this particular festival, however, I am pretty certain that it’s bound to be a colorful affair, hopefully not too hairy with bears or whatnot.
Anyway, performers like old-time musicians, Norman and Nancy Blake, Fiddler James Bryan and his daughter, Rachel will appear on stage. The …read more

Weekend at Brasstown Valley

Weekend at Brasstown Valley

The best things about Brasstown Valley resort in Young Harris, Georgia were  the food and the views. The resort is approximately three hours from Atlanta. I visited Brasstown Valley for a weekend getaway and review. I stayed in the hotel, but reported a black spot on my stay. My guest and I were politely asked to leave before our agreed upon checkout time. Even after I explained that I had a confirmed late checkout time. The front desk person, who came to the room to urge us along, did not believe me even when I told her about the …read more

Five Guys Gets Five Stars

Five Guys Gets Five Stars

I recently grabbed a burger and fries at Five Guys Restaurant, a chain that’s famous for its huge burgers and yummy fries. The burgers are handmade from actual patties, not the pre-made ones that you get at other restaurants. The fries were well-seasoned and appeared to be made from actual rustic potatoes, though they were not the extra-thick fries.
Five Guys has locations throughout the Atlanta area. The burger and fries were incredibly filling. I fell asleep right after eating. So, if you are on a diet, hmmmm, you may want to rethink a trip to Five Guys. Now, …read more
